An Enslaved Man Buys His Family From Slave Dealers

I found the story of Michael Shiner, a slave employed by his former owner working in the Washington Navy Yard in Washington D.C very touching. Slavery was one the cruelest doings in Human History, and stories like Shiner makes us have faith that goodness indeed prevails over evil. He was able to buy his own wife and three children after they were sold to slave dealers in Virginia. The article does not tell us how long it took him, but says he had support of “white well wishers.” One can only imagine the pain, and the happiness afterwards of this family. And that makes us put into perspective our daily struggles for sure. And also makes me reflect into the reasoning the men who owned slaves gave themselves; especially the Christian men or the men fighting for freedom and equality of all Americans.

  1. I really admire your reaction to this piece. In such a horrific time in human history the fact that someone was able to fight back and reclaim their family is truly amazing to hear. Sadly not everyone was this lucky, but it does give us hope that in difficult times there can be happy endings.
