Horizontal and Vertical Federalism

“This involves interactions and common programs among the 50 states.”

“This is viewed as the traditional form of federalism as it sees the actions of the national government as supreme within their constitutional sphere.”

Horizontal and Vertical Federalism refers to how much power and control the Federal government would have over the States and their relationship and boundaries. In Horizontal Federalism the Federal government power is limited, does not have direct power over the States, and the Sates are separate and politically independent from it. However in Vertical Federalism, the power between the Federal Government and the states are vertically distributed. The Federal government is on the top of this vertical line, then the states, and local governments.
