Civil Disobedience

"Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then? I think that we should be men first and subjects afterward."
(p. 222)

I loved reading about Henry David Thoreau, who was another brave man in History, who wasn’t afraid to fight for what he believed. As it was discussed in the Lecture, he was the author of the essay Civil Disobedience, in which he writes about how he was in favor of breaking the law, if one morally opposes to it and in a non physically violent manner. His point is that one should not support a law that one is against to. Henry David Thoreau was imprisoned when he refused to pay taxes to protest against slavery and the Mexican War. He makes a lot of sense and influenced many people in his time and the future.

  1. Lidia, I agree, reading Thoreau was amazing. One should think for themselves and not be manipulated by the government. Thoreau stood up for what he believe in, which in turn influenced many people.
